Cheatsheet for Sugar Levels

January 1, 2017 By Ligia

Happy New Year

We had a little scare with my daughter this holiday season, so it has brought me back to the basics. I am making index card-size cheat sheets for us to keep on hand to remind us what is the proper care for Type 1 diabetic. These are specific to her, but I think it s good reminder.

Guidelines for Caring for KD

Under 70  -Drink a 4 oz drink, or 2 Glucose Tablets  followed immediately by food containing 30 grams of carbohydrates. These carbs do not need to be bloused in pump

71-90 -Drink 4 oz juice or 2 tablets. If a meal or snack is within 30 minutes, wait, otherwise eat a snack including carbohydrates and protein, such as cheese crackers with peanut butter or cookies and milk. Bolus for snack only not juice or tablets.

91-125 -This is okay.  If exercising is planned before a meal or snack, have a  15 gram carb snack before participating. Do not bolus.

126-200 -This is fine. BG is 140 from 9pm-7am and 120 otherwise.

201-250  -A bit high, If you had a little too much to eat at your previous meal, you may be still high from that. OR if you ate less than 2 hrs ago. Don’t do a correction if you have insulin on board. Wait an hour and check again.

Over 250 -Your BG  is too high. Drink  water and other If it is a  meal/snack input carbs and BG into pump. If it is not a meal time, you need to bolus for just the blood glucose.

Note: If  blood sugar reading is over 250 twice in a row,  check her urine
