Now that 2014-2015 is officially over, it is time to get focused on my next school year. I have laid out my calendar, set my goals, and now I am zoning in on curriculum to help me achieve my goals for 2015-16. Actually, I should say help my children achieve their goals for 2015-16.

First, I want to share about this new planner I am trying out. It’s from A Plan in Place.

Yes, I get a little discount if you order. But let me tell you I am excited about this upcoming school year’s planners.

I got a planner for myself, my daughter and son. So a Teacher’s Edition, a high school edition, and student planner (not younger version).

Here is the neat part of this planner:

He has a checklist for this daily activities.

And she has a checklist and then some!

I have organization and or accountability-type goals for each of them for 2015-16, so I am really hoping that this planner breeds independence, organization, and accountability.

Every year, at the end of the school year I take time to start planning my homeschool year for the following school year. This step-goals and priorities- is part of that planning session. Unfortunately, I don’t always go back to review. I need to be better about revisiting these goals and priorities I have set for my kids. It is fun to look back at the list and see how much they have grown.

For example, one of the goals for my son for 2014-15 was for him to become more independent in his daily schoolwork. This year he truly has! We took baby steps, but slowly I removed myself from everything except Language Arts and some History.  However, some of the other goals I set didn’t happen like doing computer programming.

So some of our goals for 2015-16 have remained on the list and new ones add. I use Edsnapshots.com Plan Your Year’s Goal Sheet (link below) but you don’t need anything fancy.

Step 1: I write Strengths and Things to Improve. These are usually a little of each of these categories: academics, character, and spiritual.  Then our Goals are based on these and also things that we might need to tackle the upcoming year.

For this year, he will need to work on improving his reading and writing skills. We have a couple years before high school, but with his dyslexia he has a bit more work to do. Also on his list will be doing more projects with Dad and doing computer programming.

As for my daughter, we are working on doing a few CLEP tests. So that means working on test taking skills, study skills, and time management. She is also doing a Novel in a Year class so I really want her to focus on Time Management when it comes to her writing and school day.

Along with goals for the kids, I also make a list of family priorities. These are things that we need to work on as a family.  Some of the priorities I wrote down for this year include: a family game night, mom and dad date night, and being more physically active as a family.
