Thanksgiving Preparations

November 17, 2016 By Ligia

I just found out yesterday that I am hosting Thanksgiving dinner. I kind of knew it was coming. We had a death in the family and I don’t think anyone had put any thought into Thanksgiving, so I was asked to provide the venue for our family. I’m okay with that. It’s a way for me to serve my family in the best way I can: playing hostess which is something I do like to do.

So this morning I am googling Thanksgiving planners and want to share two that I’ve decided to use.

The Peaceful Mom has a really simple, no frills dinner/grocery list planner here.

The second is from Retro Mom Goes Green. She has several links to other websites here.

Now I am ready to get planning.

Operation Christmas Child Time!

November 15, 2016 By Ligia

It’s National Collection Week all over the US.  To find a location go to Operation Christmas Child. If you don’t know anything about this program watch a video:

I have been making shoeboxes for over 20 years! This year I will get to help at a drop off location. I am so excited.

I also plan to do 20 boxes between myself and two kids.

Join in!

Learning Ally

November 10, 2016 By Ligia

If I can to pick one website to recommend it would be Learning Ally. It has proved to be a wonderful resource for our family. Recently, I was able to take a 5 hour class on reading and writing the Orton Gillingham way. I learned so much about how to structure a writing program for not only my son, but the students I tutor as well. I am excited to implement everything I learned.

One of the reasons I love Learning Ally is they have webinars all the time for parents and educators. For example coming up this month they have a Parent Webinar Series: Assistive Tech for Writing Worksheets. In December, they are hosting an online conference,  Spotlight on Dyslexia, for parents and educators. There will be over 20 sessions.

The main reason I love Learning Ally is  the audio books. Reading is challenging for dyslexics and audio books allow them to access material they may not be able to get to on their own. For our son, it has allowed him to read dozens of books that he would probably have gawked at if it wasn’t for audio books.

Recently, I’ve noticed they are focusing on college students which is really, really in our horizon. So I am excited to start introducing my son to Learning Ally so he can start using the resources himself.

Visit Learning Ally today!
