6th Grade Curriculum Choices 2014-15

September 8, 2014 By Ligia

A bit late in posting this but I wanted to still share what my son will be working on this school year. So here it is our 6th grade curriculum choices:

Bible- He is on the last book for AWANA‘s TnT program.
We also will be doing Daniel/Revalations at CBS (Community Bible Study).

Math: Teaching Textbooks 6 and 7. We started TT6 in May so he is half way through already. He will be starting TT7 in January.

Science: In our co-op he will be doing both Apologia Astronomy and Botany. The teaching ladies decided to devote half a year to each. So by the end of this year, he will have done all 6 of the Apologia Day of Series.

Writing: We are continuing with Writeshop! We found a curriculum that is great for dyslexics. At least, this dyslexic. I shared on our 2013-14 curriculum post that we were trying it out last year with level D.  I saw such wonderful growth in him! We are doing Level E with our co-op.

Language Arts:

Spelling- Barton Spelling & Reading Program. Again, this is a great program for dyslexics. I love it!! He is on Level 4 and, Lord willing, will be in Level 5 by end of year.

Reading- I am doing a lot of audio books. We were introduced to Learning Ally which is a site dedicated to kids like my Buddy! He is listening to his books this year. Yes, he is reading as well-but mostly listening. Here is the list:

The Great Horn Spoon

Corey’s Underground Railroad

Perilous Road

Teddy Roosevelt

Thomas Edison

The Cricket in Time Square*

My Side of the Mountain*

In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson

From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Frankweiler*

He is also doing three Total Language Plus study guides. These are marked with asterisk. These we use for comprehension, vocabulary and learning literary devices. We enjoyed them last year.

Grammar- is included in Total Language Plus and also in Writeshop.

History- We are on year 2 of the US History Study in My Father’s World-1850 to Modern Times. This year we are learning states and capitols!

We loved last year’s study and hope to love this one. So far we do!

Electives:

Typingweb– a great website I found that he likes.

Spanish- I am teaching a co-op class and he will be my “helper”. He is very unwilling to learn/speak Spanish so hopefully this will help. I am using this website as part of my spine. So check it out: Spanish For Beginners

Critical Thinking with Games- another co-op class that a friends is putting together. They will be playing strategy games. Not sure which ones, but I’m sure they will be fun!

Etiquette/Health- another co-op class. I am teaching 1/2 semester of Etiquette and another mom is teaching Health.

PE- Continuing in Martial Arts he is now a blue belt. He also will do tennis, football, and we will be training for a 5k.

Phew! That’s a wrap.
